In the violence-hit southeastern Nigeria, the attackers attacked a prison with machine gun and grenade overnight and in the meantime around 2,000 prisoners managed to escape. The authorities gave information about this on Monday. Local resident Uche Okafor told that the attack started in Owerri town of Imo state at two o’clock in the night which lasted for two hours.
Authorities said the gunmen also attacked several other police and military buildings. Nigeria prison spokesman Francis Enobor said, “Efforts are being made vigorously to re-arrest the escaped prisoners.” Police said the attackers attacked with machine guns, grenades and IEDs. Violence also took place two weeks ago in southeastern Nigeria.
Attackers blow up the prison wall with explosives
In this attack, at least 12 security officers were killed in attacks on four police stations, security checkpoints and prison vehicles. No one claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Inspector General of Police of Nigeria held the separatist ‘Eastern Security Network’ active in the area. A portion of the prison wall collapsed in the latest attack.
It is being told that the attackers blew the prison wall with explosives. One police officer has been killed and several others injured in this attack. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. However, the police suspect that the separatist group ‘Eastern Security Network’ is responsible for this attack.
